A former bodyguard for Chicago Mayor Harold Washington faces felony animal abuse charges after police found his horses malnourished and shuttered up in filthy stalls at his stable in unincorporated Bloom Township, authorities said.
Two of the four horses owned by Frank Lee, 67, of the 3500 block of West Adams Street in Chicago were so poorly kept that they were later euthanized by authorities, the Cook County sheriff's office said.
Lee, a retired Chicago police officer, was charged Monday with four counts of felony aggravated animal abuse, as was the stable's manager, Donnie Edwards, 62, of the 1600 block of East 87th Place.
Lee once worked as the personal security guard for Washington, sources familiar with the case said.

STATE FUNDING SOURCES
Horse racing a win-win for school systems By JAMES A. YOUNG Published on: 08/07/08
As president of the Georgia-South Carolina Horse Racing committee, I am very concerned about Georgia education funding. I strongly support the efforts of the Consortium for Adequate School Funding.
Although Georgia is seeking to have the consortium's lawsuit dismissed, most career groups, professional educators and school superintendents throughout the state, as well as many Georgia legislators, agree that education funding in this state is inadequate.

Winged horse clan

OSTON -- A horse that escaped from an Ipswich farm Monday galloped up Interstate 95 before it was captured miles away in Newburyport, according to the Eagle Tribune.
Ernie, a 5-year-old horse, jumped a 6-foot fence at a farm on Old Right Road, made its way onto the highway and galloped in and out of traffic, police said.
The animal was later caught in Newburyport in a Toppans Lane yard a few towns away

Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin won't be running his next race on turf, as he did his most recent one, but he won't be running on Del Mar's synthetic surface, either.
Majority owner Jess Jackson announced yesterday that Curlin's next run will come in the $500,000, Grade I Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 30. The Pacific Classic six days earlier at Del Mar had been considered a possibility.
Curlin made his turf debut last month, finishing second in the Man o' War Handicap at Belmont Park. Jackson said he considered sending Curlin out on another grass track for his next race but decided to keep the horse closer to home and on a more familiar surface - at least for now

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada will host the largest wild horse and burro show in the country later this month.
The National Wild Horse Center is bringing the expoto the Reno Livestock Events Center August 15th through 17th.
The event has been around for 17 years but sponsors say this year's event is especially important because of the large number of horses that are increasing both on the range and in captivity.
With more than 33,000 wild horses in federal holding facilities, the Bureau of Land Management is considering euthanizing some to offset the high costs of keeping them.

I had no problems syncing my Exchange data to the iPhone. A lot of folks are dependent on Exchange, so this new ability has made the iPhone a first-class corporate citizen.
Apple also released tools to let IT managers remotely configure and control iPhones on their networks. In combination with Exchange syncing, that should allow Apple to make new inroads into the enterprise, with the iPhone acting as a Trojan horse for other Apple devices and services. IT departments of the world, you have been warned: Beware of geeks bearing gifts.

A rider and her horse have been rescued from a Cambridgeshire ditch where they were stuck upside down.
The horse, named Drummer, bolted as they passed the 7ft (2m) deep ditch in Longstowe on Sunday and the pair fell in, a fire service spokesman said.
Fire crews freed the woman, who was not hurt, and called a vet to sedate the distressed animal.
The horse, also uninjured, was winched out of the ditch with the help of a tractor, the spokesman added.
'Complex rescue'
John Kitchener, of Gamlingay fire station, said: 'When we arrived, both the woman and her horse were stuck at the bottom of a very steep ditch, with slippery mud on the banks.
'They were completely stuck and unable to lift themselves out

From the keynote speaker to the final inductee, the message was the same Aug. 4 at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame ceremony. That plain and simple mantra was, 'It is all about the horse.'
Though certainly not a coordinated effort, guest speaker Dean Richardson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, who spoke first, and inductee trainer Carl Nafzger, who was last on the agenda, bookended the others on the program at the 90-minute induction at the Humphrey H. Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Richardson, a noted equine surgeon, is the Charles W. Raker professor of equine surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital at the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania

urlin to race next on dirt at Saratoga
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Curlin's majority owner says the 2007 Horse of the Year is going back to a dirt track for his next race later this month.
Majority owner Jess Jackson announced Tuesday Curlin's next race will be the Grade I Woodward Stakes on Aug. 30 at Saratoga in upstate New York. Jackson said the move shouldn't indicate that he has abandoned the experiment of running the horse of turf.
As for the future, Jackson says he hasn't ruled out running Curlin again next year if purses are hiked

A TITLE-WINNING racehorse trotted through Ebbw Vale town centre to mark the official opening of a new betting shop.
Local trainer Dai Burchell brought along his horse Dere Lynn to the town centre to help open the new Ladbrokes store.
Ten-year-old Dere Lynn, who has won several titles, delighted crowds on the opening day of the state-of-the-art store.
Store manager Kevin Phelps, who previously worked in the old Ladbrokes store, was equally enthusiastic about the opening ceremony.
'It has been an excellent way to advertise the fact that we have moved to a new premises,' he said

NSW quarantines horse stable over Hendra fears

Tuesday, 05/08/2008
The NSW Department of Primary Industries has quarantined a stable next to Ballina Racecourse in the state's north after a horse showed signs similar to Hendra virus infection.
The department says the diagnosis has not been confirmed and there is no connection between this case and the recent Queensland infection at Redlands.
Quarantine measures are in place because there is a small risk the Hendra virus can be transferred to humans.
More samples from horses at the stable were collected on Monday, and the results are expected within the next few days.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Not too long after Big Brown returned to the winner's circle in Sunday's $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, his trainer, Richard Dutrow Jr., also returned to form.
Following the Haskell press conference, the topic of Curlin, the defending Horse of the Year, and the Breeders' Cup Classic came up. Dutrow, known for his candidness and cockiness during the Triple Crown run, gave his assessment of Curlin.
'Curlin couldn't win the Derby, we could,' Dutrow said. 'Curlin couldn't win [the Haskell], we could
